The Rural Payments Agency have released details of a new Calf Housing Grant, with Stage 1, the online checker now available.

The grant is offering up to 40 % of all eligible costs to build, upgrade or replace calf housing buildings. The aim of the grant is to improve calf welfare by providing housing with a good ambient environment and which facilitates social contact through pair or group housing.

For the purposes of the grant ‘calf’ refers to domestic cattle up to the age of 6 months. The grant is competitive so the buildings must deliver higher standards of welfare than legally prescribed.

The minimum grant is £15,000 and the maximum is £500,000. In addition, you can get up to 25% of the eligible costs of installing rooftop solar panels.

In terms of the actual building, it can be an A frame, monopitch or a permanent open sided building with igloos or hutches. Other buildings may be eligible but they have to be permanent buildings with foundations that are built to last.
